VAST is a standard XML-based ad response for in-stream video as well as an XML Schema Definition (XSD) for developers and was developed by the IAB. In addition to making third-party video ad serving scalable, VAST offers lots of additional functionality, such as choosing the mode of display (pre/post-roll or overlay), clickthrough and tracking URLs, and if the ad should be skippable or not (SDK only).
