Thank you very much for choosing Smaato Cost 2.0 – the cost tracker for your SmartphoneTelephoning everywhere, surfing the web, checking emails and chatting on the go is fun. But this fun is limited because (for most people) money is limited and there is always a bad conscience in the back of the head (“have I just ruined myself?”): Up to now you could only roughly guess, how much your provider will charge at the end of the month for your mobile communications. That's where Smaato Cost starts: Smaato Cost tracks all incoming and outgoing calls, data connections and SMS. After you have downloaded your rate plan from Smaato (or entered it manually), Smaato Cost calculates how much money you have to pay for each call, for the whole month, how many included minutes are left and much more. Smaato Cost allows an extremely detailed view of all aspects of your rate plan and so it can offer a detailed cost calculation like no other.

On the next start of Smaato Cost, you have the choice between updating your current profile and creating a new one. If you’ve already entered data, which you want to keep, we recommend creating a new profile. The new/updated profile is activated automatically. If you used the rate plan download, you can skip the following section. Profile Setup WizardBefore using Smaato cost, you’ll need to setup some basic settings and enter the details of your rate plan. To make this as easy as possible, we have created a setup wizard. If you are an experienced user and prefer configuring the settings manually, just go to the next section. Start the wizard by clicking ‘Setup’ and choose ‘Profile Setup Wizard’

Advanced SettingsIn the previous two sections you’ve set up the minimum information, Smaato Cost needs to calculate your mobile phone costs. Of course most rate and data plans are more complicated and to achieve the most accurate calculation you’ll need to enter some more details. How this has to be done is described in the following chapter.
Setting up your rate plan
Now you have to create some destinations for outgoing and incoming calls. Destinations describe the billing schemes for different types of calls. These types are for example mobile to mobile, landline or international calls. You will need to create a new entry for each type of outgoing and incoming call you use, to achieve the most precise cost calculation. The following procedure is identical for incoming and outgoing calls. After you have taken the following steps, please repeat them for incoming calls. Note: Not all providers charge for incoming calls. If your’s does not, please click on “Incoming Calls” and check “All incoming calls are free”. 1. Click on “Outgoing Calls”. You will find some predefined destinations, which are usually required. Some of them may already contain data, if you have used the setup wizard. Non-required destinations can be deleted by clicking the destination’s name -> “Edit” -> “Delete Destination”.
2. Create a new destination by clicking “New Destination”. Enter a fitting name for the destination (e.g. “mobile to mobile” or “landline”). You can also add multiple numbers or patterns, which are automatically associated to this destination. For example: the pattern “123*” fits all numbers starting with “123”.
3. Edit a destination by clicking on the destination name in the list. Check “Default destination” if you want to associate all numbers, that don’t fit another destination’s numbers or patterns, to this destination. ‘Increments’ describes how precise your calls are billed und how much a call costs at least. For example it is common to fully charge for the first minute and 10 second blocks for the following minutes (60/10). Check ‘deduct from incl. min.’, if this destination is valid for inclusive minutes (special numbers often are not). Enter costs per minute for peak- and off-peak-time and for weekends (if there is a special billing). Enter costs per SMS.
Click “Edit” to change the name or to add/edit the number patterns of this destination. Click “Done” to finish.
Tap on ‘additional fees’ to set the first minute to be free or to set deduction from included minutes AND billing. Repeat these steps for each required destination and as well for “Incoming calls”.
Outgoing destination Outgoing destination Click “Included Minutes” if your monthly fee includes free minutes or free SMS. Enter the amounts of anytime-, peak- and off-peak minutes as well as the included SMS into the appropriate fields. Check the box on the right, if you have unlimited included minutes/SMS for that category.
Some providers allow transferring unused included minutes to the next months. These minutes are called “rollover minutes”. Smaato Cost tries to calculate these minutes starting from the billing period in which you used the application for the first time. Most likely you already accumulated some minutes at that time, so it is the most precise way for you is to have a look at your phone bill and enter them manually after each billing period. Another argument for doing so is that the rollover minutes will expire after some time (usally after 12 months), which can't be predicted by Smaato Cost. Check "fixed" to prevent Smaato Cost from overwriting the manually entered minutes.
Click on “Data Connections” to set up your data connections. The predefined types are “Bluetooth PPP” (Bluetooth connection using your PC or a BT access point, usually not billed), CDMA/EVDO (used on CDMA networks), CSD (used on GSM networks), “GPRS/UMTS” (usually used in GSM locations) and WLAN/WiFi. Note: Some types may not be available on some devices.
You only need to setup the connections types, you are using, they’re detected automatically on connect. Click on one of the connection types and choose between data- and time-based billing. In addition to the costs per data- or time-unit some providers charge for each session or for each day, you use the data service. Enter costs per session or day if applicable. Enter the size of the billing unit your provider charges at least and its price. If you have free traffic/time included in your data plan, please enter the amount or check “Unlimited data” if data connections are free of charge.
“Home zone is” a feature offered by some providers. The home zone is an area around your home or work, within you gets extra low prices. It is meant as a replacement for your landline phone. Currently you will have to manually tell Smaato Cost Control whether a call was within home zone or not. You can do this within the call log of after each call via the after call display. Click on home zone and check “Use Home zone” to activate this feature. You’ll need to add special home zone tariffs to the destinations you’ve created in the previous chapter. After having activated the home zone feature, the destination-screen has an extra tab for home zone.
By clicking “Peak Times” you’re able to define when peak- and weekend-times start and end. Click on “Holiday” to enter public holidays, which are usually billed as weekends or as off-peak (check the appropriate box). After having entered a holiday you can edit its date by clicking on the date and you can change its name by clicking the name. Congratulations! You’ve now set up your rate plan to achieve the most precise cost calculation.

Using Smaato CostNow you’ve entered your rate plan and set up the application to fit your needs, it’s time to use Smaato Cost. As you already know, Smaato Cost tracks all your incoming and outgoing calls, SMS and data connections. You can review all connections within the call log.
Call Log
The table view can be sorted by each of the headlines – just tap on them. Tap again to reverse the order. You can also change the width of the columns by dragging the lines between them with your stylus. The leftmost column contains symbols which stand for the different entry types (see picture).
Click an entry to see a detailed view, where you can review all relevant data and the calculated costs. In addition you’re able to select the entry’s destination and assign it to home zone. Select the destination corresponding to the number of the selected entry. Future calls to/from this number will automatically be associated to the selected destination. Within the destination setup you can also enter schemes for numbers, which should be automatically associated to a destination (see “Setting up your rate plan”). For example numbers starting with “0123” can be automatically assigned to landline calls. Check home zone to calculate the costs of this call using your special home zone tariff (see “Setting up your rate plan” for details). Note: You’ll need to check “home zone” for every entry – association to a number would not be sensible.
Select the “Graph” tab to view the monthly distribution of your phone calls, data connections, SMS etc. (X-axis: date; Y-axis: amount).
